Lighthouse is 8 Years old!!!

Today Lighthouse Community Church celebrated its 8 year anniversary.  Pastor Jerry asked me to come and share in the sermon with him.

It was an honor to be back to our old church.  It's been three years since we finished our assignment there and Jerry Willhite took over as pastor.

The church is doing great.  Pastor Jerry has done a fabulous job with continuing the ministry and discipling the church.

It was so good to see many of the core people who have now been in the church for years.  Below our some pictures from the day.

It was great sharing the pulpit with Pastor Jerry.

Above his three guys that used to be in our teen club and they still attend the church.  Below is our good friend Mike (the drummer)

Our church started in the home of Sam and Angie with a small group in 2000.

This was our first home in Oaklawn.

This was our 2nd home in Oaklawn.

Finally Home

It was a great trip.  I covered 2000 miles and talked with lots of people.   It was so good to come home. I will write more about the trip later. But I wanted to share this video.  Ethan had worked up a couple of songs for me.   It was really sweet (and funny).

Our Story

God has done so much in our lives in the past year and healed us in a lot of different ways.  Here is a lengthy update that gives detail more of our journey.  This will mostly be from my (Matt) perspective, I but will share things we both have learned.  This will be a series of blogs that will share what we have learned and now what our current role is.

These last years, we have experienced a wide range of emotions. We have seen God heal us from some intense darkness and burnout, and we wanted to share that with you all.  I’ll start our story during the year of 2006.  At this point Angie and I were in the middle of leading at Lighthouse.  I was the pastor and Angie was the worship leader.  Ethan and Bree were 4 and 2.  In the past year, our church had experienced some challenges, so we both had to step up more in our leadership.  So during that year, we were both starting to experience some tiredness but we didn’t know the root of it or have the self awareness to make some changes.  Now as we look back, we realize that we just didn’t know how to take care of ourselves emotionally and spiritually.  We constantly served but didn’t know how to fill ourselves back up.

That fall our current house opened up, and we were able to get the house ready to move in.  This was the first step in thinking about our transition and saying to the church that we won’t be here forever.

So all of that fall, Angie and I worked many hours on the house while continuing our church responsibilities and dealing with 2 young children.  This is when our fatigued heightened.  It was often that I would work at our house in the afternoon and then tag team with Angie after the kids went to bed and she would work until 10 or later.  But we enjoyed the work and were excited with our new house.  We moved in December of ‘06 excited to have an amazing house and take a big exhale of relief.  However, on the 16th, we found out Angie’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.

With that news, Angie made several trips to Nebraska to see her mom. Also, in the beginning of ‘07, our WI leadership told us that this would be our last year of ministry at Lighthouse.  Our job in ‘07 was to make our transition and look for a pastor.  I spent most of that year training our leadership team and looking for a pastor.  By then, as I look back now, I realize that I was struggling with serious fatigue and depression. There were days I wasn’t motivated to do to much other than what I absolutely had to do.  Spiritually I felt empty and dry. But we knew that we had to finish well. We persevered on.

During August of that year, we planned to take the month off to go to California for a family vacation and break from ministry.  We were hoping for a time of refreshment so we could push through until December when we would leave Lighthouse.  But again, plans changed.  Angie’s mom’s condition continued to worsen, and she ended up dying on the 4th of August, 2007.

Initially the pain was intense for Angie, but since we were in the middle of transitioning at the church, we kept going and she stuffed her emotions.  That fall, God provided us with a future pastor, Jerry Willhite.  We felt like we ended our time at Lighthouse on a high note with a great send-off service.  We were amazed that in the middle of our own burnout, God’s grace was still with us and in that church.

We had made plans to spend January through April in Costa Rica for language learning and a sabbatical. We were looking forward to this time to regroup and spend great time as a family.

The time in Costa Rica was unbelievable for us.  We loved the culture, the travel, and meeting great new friends.  We felt like God was starting to show us walls in our lives that had contributed to the burnout and felt like God opened up some things in our lives.

We were excited to make a new start when we got home early May.  Three days after arriving home, our basement flooded.  This sent us into more chaos, spending the month of May cleaning up instead of focusing on the things we learned while in Costa Rica.

Then the big devastation hit us.  On June 16th, we found out that my brother Phil had passed away.  Wow, that sent us into a major tailspin.  The pain of that day and weeks to come were so intense.  We had a hard time making it through.  It opened up new wounds for all of us and it sent Angie into a funk as well as the double grief of losing Phil and her mom in less than a year The heartbreak of all that she stuffed and now faced hit her hard.

We realized then that we needed to take time off from any formal ministry and church planting so that we could rest, heal, and have our call renewed.  I spent the whole year working at the thrift store, our medical clinic, and then doing various projects around WI.  We are so grateful that our WI leadership gave us the year to rest and not have to minister.

Through working at our clinic, God opened the door for me to start driving the Mobile Clinic.  I took my CDL test and passed.  I became an official trucker!

During that year, Esther (Phil’s wife) had decided to return to Indonesia.  She invited me to go for the one year anniversary of his death.  Phil’s good friend, Caleb, was going back, so I worked out the travel with him.  In June of ‘09, I spent 10 days touring all the places where Phil had lived, studied and worked.  That trip was so good for my heart.  I really think that emotional healing for me happened on that trip.

I came back to Wichita feeling more refreshed and ready to engage in ministry.  As I look back now to my burnout, I realized I needed more than emotional healing.  I needed spiritual and physical healing as well.

After that trip I was starting feeling like myself again.  I had more energy for people and didn’t feel so down.  During that summer, I worked with different youth groups that came to visit.  This led to one of my current roles of being the coordinator for all our volunteers.

But God was making it clear to me that I was still in need of spiritual healing. In this past year, he has provided different people in my life to help in that healing.  During this past year, I’ve realized a few lies that I had believed about myself that I needed God to heal me of.

1.  I believed somehow that I needed to arrive spiritually to be like the other missionaries. Because I was experiencing so much burnout, I didn’t feel as “spiritual” as I felt I should be.

2.  I believed that to be a “super-missionary”, I had to be a certain kind of person.  I was striving to be someone that God hadn’t made me to be.

When it was clear that those characteristics weren’t in me, I wasn’t sure who I was. God showed me how much he deeply loves me and accepts me for who I am right now. I can be myself and I don’t have to ever arrive spiritually.  It gave me so much freedom and joy.

I have been meeting with a guy named Dave Williams.  He is a professor at Barclay College.  He has been teaching me how to connect with the Lord. Through this past year, I felt that God was spiritually healing me. One that will continue the rest of my life.

Then the last year where I needed healing was physically. During the last years, I had let my body go and I was heavier than I wanted.  I was out of shape and not able to do what I wanted to.  This past year I have made some strides with my green smoothies (which I will write about another time) and started to exercise.  These past two months, I was able to do both more consistently, and I’ve lost a total of 22 pounds or so.  Now I feel so much better and have way more energy!

Through all of this, we’ve learned so many lessons, and in future blogs, we’ll share more of what we have learned.  I will also share what our roles are with World Impact.

I am so grateful for the Lord’s grace in our lives.  It was so clear how at each time He guided the healing process and gave us what we needed.

Vacation Time

Tomorrow we are leaving for our vacation to Florida.  We will spend 6 days in Miami going to different beaches and then 6 days in Orlando going to Disney World.  In Miami, we are staying with my cousin Rebecca and her family.  They have 2 young boys that our kids are excited to play with.

It has been an extremely busy for all of us and we are looking forward to great family time.  The last 4 years we have used a Capital One Rewards card for most of our expenses and we finally have enough points for 4 free flights.  Then we were able to find a hotel on Hotwire 2 miles from Disney for $32 a night that includes a pool and a free breakfast!!

When we return we will quickly celebrate the kids birthday's and then they will start school.

Summer Activites

Like every summer, time is flying by. We scheduled a lot of activities for the kids and so it has been really full for them. (and we haven't heard the bad word of boredom at all)

Here our a few of the highlights of the summer.

  • The first week of the summer Ethan went to a day Cub Scout camp. He did all kids of outdoor activities and absolutely loved it.
  • Also during the first two weeks of the summer both of the kids did swimming lessons.
  • Then the 2nd week of the summer they went to a VBS at Eastminster Presbyterian. They loved all of the activities, the music, and learning more about God.
  • The 4th week of the summer Ethan had a basketball camp at the YMCA. He went 3 hours each morning all week. He deeply enjoyed the camp and came home wanting to play more basketball each afternoon.
  • Both kids have been playing baseball all summer. Ethan is in a 7-8yr. old pitching machine team and Bree is playing tee ball for the first time. They both have had great coaches. Ethan is learning how to hit the ball well and well Bree is just learning.
  • During the week of the 4th of July, Angie and the kids went to Colorado Springs to see her dad. The kids had a great time hiking with their Grandpa.
  • This week they are getting ready to spend some time with Grandpa and Grandma Penner.
  • Then in a week and a half we are leaving for our big family vacation to Florida!!
Below our some different pictures from the summer.

Seeing Toy Story 3 in 3D. This was a big deal for Ethan as Buzz Lightyear was his first toy that he really enjoyed. He has been waiting for this movie to come out for 3 years.

Bree Singing Her favorite song.

Bree loves to song. As soon as we get the car she asks for music and sings along to the songs she knows. This is her favorite song right now. The song is by Christy Nockels and called Healing is In Your Hands. That is Angie's favorite artist.

Summer is Here

Bree finished Pre-K last week and Ethan finished 1st grade yesterday.

Our kids did so well in school. Ethan continues to amaze us with his Spanish. Because he has been learning two languages, it has taken him a little longer to get the hang of reading. But now he is doing well in both languages. While he doesn't know every word he reads in Spanish, he can read perfectly with a great accent.

We are excited for all of our summer activities for our family and ministry. I will be directing our summer intern program. We will have two interns and one full-time volunteer that I will be over. They will do lots of ministry to kids and teens and work in our church plant. Our full-time volunteer will work with me with our different volunteer groups that we will host this summer. He is an amazing cook!

We have planned many fun activities for our kids. Ethan goes to boy scout camp next week. He is also playing baseball and Bree is playing t-ball for the first time. It's fun to see her learn to play. She does so many things left-handed that she can't figure out which hand to throw with. So far we are trying right and that seems to be a little better than the left but we aren't totally sure. :)

The kids will also do swimming lessons the next two weeks. They will do a week of VBS at a local church, and Ethan will also have a week of basketball camp at the YMCA.

Then in July, Angie and the kids will spend a few days with her dad in Colorado and then we will take our family vacation to Florida.

We have set a goal for Ethan to read 30 minutes a day this summer. If he can complete that goal, he will get his own digital Spanish English dictionary. He is excited to earn that. He loves looking up words on mine.

Here are a couple of pictures of the summer hair cut we just gave Ethan.

Encounter the City

Praise the Lord for a great Encounter the City conference! We had 45 students from Barclay College and 5 from Sterling College. The point of the conference was to expose students to the city and to urban missions.

Here were a few of the highlights:

Media Presentations - I have a had an intern from WSU working with me for the past 4 months. She created 4 media presentations that went along with the themes of the weekend. They showed great pictures of the city and our ministry to the accompaniment of urban music.

Teachings - On Friday night Don Davis gave an amazing talk on the centrality of the church in urban missions. Sadly, for our American evangelical culture, the church is sometimes seen as an option for our spirituality. Don made it absolutely crystal clear that the church is not an option for a believer but that God has always been drawing people to Himself. He stated that the Church is the only institution that has empowered the urban poor.

Saturday morning we had three teachings on the poor in the Bible, on culture, and on evangelism in the city.

Here is one cool story. We have a new volunteer here in Wichita that is doing all of our cooking for conferences and volunteer groups. He is feeling that God might be calling him to work with us full time. On Friday night as he heard Don teach on the church, he said to his wife, "I wish that I could get a full list of verses on the poor in the Bible" (not knowing that we had provided that in our booklet). So Saturday morning as Ryan started teaching he said, "I am going to go through various verses in Psalms and Proverbs on the poor and in your booklet there are 5 pages of verses." As this volunteer heard this, his mouth just dropped open as he knew God has just answered his prayer.

Worship Times - This generation loves to worship God. That was so evident during our worship times. Angie did a great job of leading worship. In addition to two sessions she led, we also had a late night worship time. About 20 students stayed and it was a powerful time.

Cultural Game - Friday night we had a cultural game. The students were broken into several groups and each group had a different characteristic. They had to act out their new culture and figure out the characteristics of the other groups. The students really got into it.

Evangelism in Oaklawn - A highlight for all of them was going out in the community of Oaklawn (our old church plant area) on Saturday afternoon. The students went door to door with flyers about the Mobile clinic and a survey. The students shared the gospel with many people and prayed with lots of people. It was exciting to see them apply the teachings from the weekend out in the community. It was clear that God was moving in their hearts.

Thanks for your prayers for this conference. It was evident that God met us all in a special way.

Projects

The past months, we have been working on several projects and they are all about done.

Last week we had a video crew in for several days. I (Matt) was with the crew for a couple of days as we filmed the different aspects of our ministry. We got several testimonies of lives that have been changed by the Lord within our ministry, and we also filmed testimonies of all our missionaries. At the end of this project, each missionary will have their own video to show supporters, as well as a Wichita World Impact video. I am excited to see how they all turn out.

This weekend, we are having our first Encounter the City conference. I have been leading a team preparing for 60 college students coming Friday night the 9th through Saturday evening. We will have about 50 students from Barclay College in Haviland, and 8 students from Sterling College. Angie will lead a couple of worship times and we will have several different teaching sessions. The topics range from, "The Centrality of the Church in urban missions, The Poor in the Bible, a teaching on Culture, and Evangelism in the City." Then Saturday afternoon we will do a tour of our different sites, and then Pastor Jerry at Lighthouse will lead them in doing door to door evangelism in our old church plant neighborhood.

Through the teachings and exposure to the city, we hope to challenge them with the needs of the city and not to ignore the Biblical mandate Christians have for the poor. Also we will be sharing about the various opportunities to serve with World Impact and would love to have a couple of students consider internships with us.

I also have been working on our 2nd 100 hole golf tournament. This is a big fund raise for our local ministry. We will have over 20 golfers participating. The tournament is on April 19th.

I will be playing in the event and looking for sponsors. On the link above there are instructions if you would be interested in sponsoring me. All of the money that I raise will be doubled.

Please pray for us as we complete these projects. Pray for good leadership and energy to do them well.

TUMI Satellite Summit 2010

Two weeks ago Angie and I had the awesome opportunity in helping lead worship for the TUMI Summit. 75 people or so came in for the conference. They are all mentors for TUMI satellites around the country and world. You can read more about TUMI here and their satellites. Here is a sample of the worship time we were apart of.

Ethan playing basketball and Ethan dancing.

Ethan just finished his basketball season. I did a lot of video all year and never got him scoring any points. At his last game he made three shots in a row and I got them all on video.

Ethan learned this dance at school in P.E. class. He was so excited to do it for us. He said he was chosen to be one of the leaders for this dance at school. So between basketball and dancing he has two career options.

Moody Bible Recruiting Trip

This was my third time at Moody in the past year. I spent two days on campus with Ryan Carter a fellow missionary here in Wichita. We stayed in the dorms and shared in 6 classes. It was a great time being with the students although I realize I am getting pretty old to stay in college dorms, but it was a blast. Just get more tired than my days in college.

Here is a video that highlights my time.

Saying Good Bye to a Friend

Monday was the funeral for my good friend Tom Rhodebaugh. Tom has been apart of our family since I was a baby.

He grew up in Philadelphia and in a family that did not know the Lord. So Tom experienced lots of hard things growing up and was living his life in rebellion to the Lord. His sister had found Christ and she started tell him about the Lord. He finally gave his life to the Lord when he was in his middle 30's. He got connected with a pastor out there who then moved to McPherson, KS. Tom decided to visit this pastor and his family, and when Tom got to McPherson, he liked it so much that he went back to Philly and packed up and returned to MAC in the summer of 1977.

Tom was single and never got married. Therefore several families allowed Tom to be a part of their family. Mine was one of those. My dad and Tom because best friends. They played hours of golf together and went to many basketball and football games together.

Tom often took my brother and I out to eat and taught us how to bowl. He was a remarkable bowler, bowling several 300 games.

In high school, I worked for Tom for 2-3 summers mowing lawns with my good friend Erik Vogel. We have so many wonderful and funny stories from those summers. Tom was always very opinionated so we could get into great discussions.

Tom's commitment to Christ was always steady and faithful. He had been radically saved by Christ and he was so bold telling others about his faith.

Over the last 10 years, Tom was faithful in supporting Angie and I. Whenever I would preach in Mac, he was always sitting in the front row giving me an Amen and smiling.

When I would come home to visit my parents, we'd always see his truck and lawn mower and he stop and say hi and we'd catch up.

This past November, he went in for a heart procedure and suffered complications from that and never fully recovered. He spent time in and out of the hospital through December and then entered Wesley December 26 to never leave.

I had several good visits with him but the most powerful was 2 weeks or so before he died. At some point he realized that he might not be getting better, so I went to say goodbye to my friend. He was so tender and just rubbed my hand. We looked deep into each other's eyes and shed many tears. I was able to tell him how much he meant to me and how grateful I was for his friendship. I also told him to say hi to my brother when he got to heaven. I don't know how all of that works, but I want to believe he communicated that to Phil.

As I left, he just kept waving to me. What a powerful moment that I will always remember. How often do we get to tell a good friend what they mean to us and be able to say goodbye.

Tom passed away January 28th at around 10:00 PM. It's such an amazing reality to think how in a twinkling of an eye we are in this life and instantly in the presence of Christ.

In the past 2 1/2 years, I've had three people close to me die. Each time, I am reminded and challenged to live fully for Christ. I realize what this life is truly about, and my resolve to follow Christ deepens.

I pray my life will be like Tom's. I want to live to my last breath, sharing the love of Christ with others.

Goodbye, old friend. Thanks for the influence on my life and for the cherished memories. Someday we will see each other again and catch up with Phil on old times.

Attempting a new Blog

Angie and I are starting this new blog as a way to communicate from our day to day lives here in Wichita serving with World Impact. We will post ministry updates, family updates, and just random things that are happening in our lives, along with pictures and videos.

We hope you enjoy it and getting a better glimpse into what we do on a regular basis with World Impact.
